Tokyo

Tokyo is mesmerizing.  A city of juxtapositions.  It's a place where centuries-old shrines and temples coexist harmoniously with cutting-edge fashion and vibrant nightlife. It's a truly magical atmosphere that's unlike anything else in the world.

Best Time To Go

The best time to visit Tokyo is between spring (March-May) or fall (October-November).  The weather during these months are temperate with minimal rain.  During the end of March through the beginning of April, it is Sakura (cherry blossom) season and is a beautiful time to visit.  The only caveat, however, is that it is peak season especially for some asian countries who also have a school break during that time. Beware summer is extremely hot and humid, and is their rainy season.

Things To Do
  • Yoyogi Park and Meiji Jingu: the park is a beautiful respite to the busy city and you can easily walk to Meiji Jingu, a Shinto Shrine.

  • Tsukiji Market: meander through the inside market, get some mochi and snacks in the outter market.  Don't miss out and get a table at one of the amazing Omakase in the outer market like Daiwa Sushi.

  • Senso-ji Temple: one of Tokyo's oldest and most famous Buddhist temples in the Asakusa district.

  • Harajuku: the epicenter of street youth fashion is a must go.  Walk though the alleys and browse unique boutiques and cafes.

  • Animal Cafe: a hedgehog cafe was one of the highlights for my kids. There are also cat, dog, capyneko, owl, and miniature pig cafes.

  • TeamLabs: teamLabs Planets which was so creative and immersive. Be sure to note that you must go into the experience barefoot.  If we had more time I would have gone to Teamlab Borderless as well.

  • Shibuya Scramble and Shibuya Sky: you can't go to Tokyo without experiencing the Scramble, where traffic is stopped on all four sides and up to 3,000 can cross every 2 minutes.  Pre-purchase tickets and check out Shibuya Sky to get an arial view of the Scramble as well as breathtaking views of the city.  Sunset tickets are highly coveted, however, our evening time views were stunning.

  • Disneyland Sea: the sea theme is unique to Tokyo and the park is a manageable size for one day of fun. Our favorite ride was Journey to the Center of the Earth.

  • Puroland: this small theme park is for Sanrio lovers.  Get fast passes, which are inexpensive, to bypass the long lines on some rides. â€‹

Off the Beaten Path

  • Kodokan: seasoned Judo or martial arts practitioners can train with black belts at the world headquarters of Judo.  Contact the Kodokan to schedule.

  • Vintage Shopping: check out QOO or Casanova in Shibuya for vintage designer bags and accessorsies.

Where To Eat
  • Kobe Beef Kaiseki 511: try Kobe steak at one of the "World's 101 best steak restaurants 2023"

  • Daiwa Sushi: you can't go to Tokyo without trying at least one Omakase.  Sugita or Akira are on my list.

  • Daimaru Food Hall: think gourmet food fare

  • New York Grill: enjoy panoramic views of the city and top notch food.  Hop to the New York bar after for a night cap with live music

Travel Tips
  • Bring a small bag to carry your trash to dispose of at the end of the day.  Public trash cans are few and far between.

  • Be respectful and mindful not to talk on the trains.

  • Hotels often have a three person maximum and twin beds. Some hotels allow two kids to count as one person, but check with the hotel prior to booking.

  • Get Suica train cards if you have children (who do not have phones) at the JR office at the airport
