Dubrovnik

One of the most picturesque cities I have been to.  Dubrovnik, often called the "Pearl of the Adriatic," is a stunning coastal city in Croatia.  The city is surrounded by beautiful ancient stone walls from the 13th century, and was the main filming location of "King's Landing" in Game of Thrones. Cobblestone streets, Baroque architecture, and panoramic sea views make this city a popular tourist destination.

Best Time To Go

The best time to visit Dubrovnik is from May - June where days are longer but temperatures are still warm, not hot.  During the height of summer, temperatures can reach high 80's F.  September - October is also a good time as fall welcomes a milder climate and fewer tourists.  I travelled at the end of May and the weather was spectacular, and the sea was warm enough to swim.

Things To Do
  • Walk the City Walls: roughly 1.25 miles, walk the entire City Walls.  Not only will you get iconic views of the Adriatic Sea against orange terracotta rooftops, but will also see the Minceta Tower, aerial views of local streets and homes, and the Dubrovnik Harbor.

  • Private Boat Cruise: charter a boat to island hop and cruise around the Elafiti islands and Adriatic Sea. You can even have the captain stop at popular swimming or snorkeling locations.

  • Visit Lokrum Island:  an easy day trip, this island is only a 15 minute ferry ride away.  The island has a botanical garden, salt lake, and swimming holes.  Perfect for Game of Thrones fans as there is an old Benedictine monastery that is now a visitor center with a Game of Thrones exhibition with a replica of the Iron Throne.

  • Dubrovnik Cablecar: though very "touristy," this is a quick and fun way to get an aerial view of Dubrovnik and the Adriatic Sea.  Go at sunset for amazing views.

Off the Beaten Path

  • Cave Bar More: check out this bar built into a cave and part of Hotel More.  Right by the water, this bar is definitely a "must go" when in Dubrovnik

  • Sunj Beach: avoid the crowds and go to Sunj Beach in Lopud, a small quiet beach that only locals know about.  The water is crystal clear and there are chairs and umbrellas you can rent.

  • Visit the Jesuit Staircase, the filming location where Cersei Lannister is naked and forced to do the "Walk of Shame" in Game of Thrones.

Where To Eat
  • Restaurant 360: this was the only restaurant worth the hype.  An amazing dining experience with water views, and warm ambiance.  This one Michelin star restaurant focuses on modern gastronomy

  • Lady Pi-Pi: pop in for lunch on the terrace.  This restaurant offers a simple menu with fresh ingredients.   â€‹â€‹

Travel Tips
  • Take an Uber! Unfortunately, it took a couple days for us to realize we were considerably overpaying for our taxi rides (to the tune of hundreds).

  • Foodies should be warned that food, in general, was good but not excellent with the exception of Restaurant 360.  We tried high end, and lower end restaurants and felt the quality of food was "meh."

  • Though the City Wall walk is not long, expect to stop and take photos and allow for 2 hours.  During peak summer months, start early or late afternoon to avoid the heat.  â€‹
